Nakudla SharkFest Christies Beach - 14th November

From AUD $29.00
  • Duration: 90 Minutes (approx.)
  • Location: Christies Beach
  • Product code: Nakudla

Nakudla SharkFest II! Due to demand, we have released a second event - Saturday 14th November! Who wants to swim with Nakudla!? Nakudla is the Kaurna word for shark. Join us for a guided snorkel with our "puppies of the sea" (Port Jackson sharks) at Christies Beach. Port Jackson sharks (PJ's) are small harmless sharks that feed on small crabs and shellfish. Learn why sharks are so important to the health of our reefs. In early November the PJ's come into shallow water to mate, lay eggs and rest - often aggregating in the hundreds on one small area of the reef.  The Christies Beach Reef is home to an amazing variety of colourful fish, algae and plant life.

IMPORTANT - NAKUDLA SHARKFEST CHANGE OF EVENT LOCATION – 14th November.

We have changed the location of Nakudla SharkFest from Port Noarlunga Jetty to Christies Beach.

Due to construction work and fewer Port Jackson sharks at Port Noarlunga Jetty the event will now be held at Christies Beach (Marquee and registration will be near public toilets and beach entrance ramp at the southern end of Beach - Centre Beach Road/Esplanade. Opposite Aussie Home Loans).

We have spotted several Port Jackson sharks at the Christies Beach site over the past week and none at Port Noarlunga Sanctuary, so it appears the aggregation has moved to the reef just north of where they settled last year. There have also been a couple of resident southern eagle rays spotted resting on the Christies Beach Reef.

We are expecting calm sea conditions on the day with temperature or around 25oC.

If the event is cancelled due to unsafe sea conditions a text message and email will be sent to all participants. The Facebook page will also be updated. Let’s pray for good sea conditions on the day – the weather has been hard to read over the past couple of weeks.

FAQs

What concessions are recognised?

EMS recognises any Australian concession including Health Care Card, Pensioner Card, Seniors Card, Student Card, Austudy, ABSTUDY and DVA Gold Card.

Where do I meet to take part in the tour?

EMS Snorkel leaders will have a registration table set up at centre Beach Road/Esplanade (near toilets - southern end of the beach)  - look for the EMS trailer, marquee tent and banner.

Is there an age limit to enter the event?

The event is open to children 5 years and above who can swim.

What can/can't I bring to the event?

Bring your own wetsuit and snorkelling gear (if you don't have your own snorkelling equipment we can provide free of charge).

Do you need to have snorkelling experience?

You don't need snorkelling experience but you do need to be a good swimmer (swim any stroke to move through water at least 25m unassisted). Extra buoyancy devices (boogie board, pool noodles and life vests) are available if needed. Larger groups will be broken down to smaller groups with similarly experienced snorkelers in each group - this allows more assistance to those who require it.
